I don't know why I put off seeing this film. Maybe in the back of my mind I thought this would be a very pretentious arthouse kind of film. Very contrived and maybe a even over-acted judging from the clips I saw that featured Angela Bettis' jittery, twitching performance. I think it is absolutely great! The set-up is pretty simple: a young girl is ostracized due to her lazy eye and strange upbringing. Her only friend is a doll encased in glass that looks like something from a Charles Band movie. The doll itself becomes a representation of May herself. Frail, isolated. Bettis' performance elicits sympathy from the viewer and there is something about this character that really gets under your skin. There are lots of beautiful, strange, surreal and comedic images and the final scene is memorable. I found the plot to be fairly predictable, than again from the flash forward we see at the beginning we all know exactly were this is going. This is a great film. Can't wait to catch 'The Woods' ... whenever that's going to be released.

haha i absolutely LOVED this movie. what i found brilliant about this movie is that it portrays some of the most horrific images ive ever seen on film, but the tone and atmosphere were both lighthearted. I thought that would take away the disturbing aspects of the film, but instead it made the film more mind numbing. thanks for this post! I am glad someone else out thre agress with me
