Directing is a lot easier if you don't think of yourself as a director, but others do. If you're wearing riding boots and using a megaphone, you are an idiot. If you're wearing a vest and a baseball cap and spend all your time talking about Scorsese and Coppola, you look like a wannabe.
The BEST THING a lo-budget director can be... is normal. Yourself, no pretentions, no formalities, put the needs of your actors and crew before your own (provided those needs are in line with the needs of the production) Here are some of my personal rules for my personal conduct:
I never say action or cut. I say "Go, whenever you're ready" and "Okay, that's good". I never sit in a chair. I stand and let everyone else sit. I have a conversation with everybody. Nobody is too small to chat with me, extras and caterers are people too. I introduce people to each other and encourage them to be friends outside of the set. I've even seen two actors go on a date together.
Remember: You are NOT Steven Soderberg, so you have NO right to act like him. You need a sense of reality and to know just where you stand on the show business food chain. If you're close to the bottom, as most of us are, we should keep our confidence, but not act like we're movie gods when we are not.
