Anyone planning on seeing this one. I myself have enjoyed Shaymalan's films for the most part but if this is another twist ending, I think this may be the film that breaks him. He seems to write incredible moments of suspense only to write himself in a corner and put some kind of gimmicky twist ending on a film.
SPOILER WARNING:
This is what i've heard abuot the Village. It is set in modern times and there are no creatures at all. In fact, the red marks are used by construction crews when deciding to demolish a building or such. I dont know about you guys, but this is such a letdown! This would be a great Twilight Zone episode but to throw down 8 dollars and be misled like this ... ugh.

I haven't seen it yet; but I thought the twist was that gansters--the Bloods--lived in the woods, in the nude. And if they see red, they go insane... And in the end one of the villagers, dressed in red blanket, walks onto a street and sees a ganster in a car, who says "Crazy white people!" and drives away.

hmm .. how about M. Night jumps out of the woods and screams 'wazzup bi-otch!' and then winks at the audience and runs off with our money.
Curse you night! You did it to us again!

I saw it and thought it was amazing. By far M. Night's best, and for me its the best movie so far this year. If there is one thing I could complain about its not the movie, but its advertising. While it delivered its far share of scares, and I admit, screams, I didn't see it as the fright fest the trailers promised. I saw it as something so much more, and something brillant.
What it was was a touching romance story about the lenghts one would go to for love. And there is also the underlineing point of what lengths parents will go to to protect there children. And those two points are put to the test further by being explored in a place ruled by fear, que scary creatures in the woods.
I gave "The Village" 4 stars out of 4 in my review on Yahoo. I just can't wait to see what Shyamalan can deliever us next.

i actually read about the film through movie spoilers.com and I get the impression it is also a jab at the Bush admin as well. I do feel Night is a creative director and hate that he has to come up wiht a gimmick of sorts in order to satisfy an audience.

Wow, I have been waiting so long to post in this forum, but i couldn't face the spoiler warning. I've just seen the film, and I agree that it is the best film of the year so far. there are anti-bush undertones and september 11 metaphors, and the film would take repeat viewings to fully understand every connotation. Everything in this film worked so well - every frame had been produced with care, and the hard work put into the film definitely shows. The cinematography was excellent, thanks to Coen bros. regular Roger Deakins. The film was also cast perfectly, with standout performances from Adrien Brody, William Hurt and newcomer Bryce Dallas Howard. The music was creepy, the tension was built masterfully, and the few scary bits were genuinely scary, but the film still gave room for thought. I should probably have posted this in the reviews section, but...ah well. I strongly recommend this film.
