....and what would make a good fake eye? i figured some paint and a white gumball.... but is there something out there that is softer, so it can be punctured more easily?

if the head is for crushing purposes there is always the time-tested Troma method of a melon filled with blood and meat with a wig. sounds cheesy but it works.
As for molds, you will want something that is liquid so that it gets into all the nooks and crannies of the object being molded. Plaster works well but ultra cal 30 works best (cause it's not as brittle). DO NOT try and cast a head with plaster or ultra cal though, that could wind up being fatal, inanimate objects only.
Any brand of gelatin will do. go for bulk if possible, you can never have to much of this stuff. It would also make a good eyeball. If you want absolute realism though try to get a cow or sheeps eyeball from a butcher. You can even use a syringe to draw out liquid from the eye and add in some blood if you wanted to. Sounds gross but works great though it's not for the squeamish

we used the troma method on the last flick. i found it works o.k. with the right cuts and the right angles. and even better, it makes the film campy and fun. (who says amatuer filmamking isn't?)
thats great advice. thanks abundant!!
