I recommend this book 100% also, it's the thing that made me actually try filmmaking instead of contemplating that I needed to go to school before I picked up a camera. It also made me a HUGE fan of Robert Rodriguez, he seems like such a down-to-Earth guy.

I was fortunate enough to meet him back when El Mariachi was doing the festival circuit. He is a very cool guy, really friendly and open about his work. If you watch the 'spy kids' or 'once upon - mexico' documentary special features, that's pretty much what the guy is like in person. The only thing to watch out for in his book, is that you really do have to read between the lines and realise that a lot of what happened was luck, timing and good pr. We can all make great films, but we need to be careful not to count on hitting the big time like RR. (i.e. don't go running up a huge overdraft or credit card bill when making your movie, expecting to pay it all off with your first Fox royalties cheque!!)

Other good books to read are:
The Guerilla Film Maker's Handbook by Chris Jones & Genevieve Jolliffe
The Unkindest Cut: How a Hatchet-Man Critic Made His Own $7,000 Movie and Put It All on His Credit Card by Joe Queenan
How I Made a Hundred Movies in Hollywood and Never Lost a Dime by Roger Corman & Jim Jerome
