I'm getting interested in horror make-up and as a beginner what would be the best book to start my studies?
I've heard that Tom Savini has a good one... what's its title?

Youll either find this helpful or you wont:
Do it by yourself. Everything you need to know is avaliable on the internet. When i firts started out doing prosthetics i just read stuff on the internet and experimented by myself.
All the prosthetics for my first SFX film were made with clay, plaster, gelatin, paint, and of cause tape. A hot glue gun is also recomended.
Just teach yourself, start off in gelatin because its incredibly cheap and just experiment until you get the desired result. For my current production (Mad as a Hatter) all the prostheticts were done using more or less those items. If you get stuck dont look it up in a book just post it here or a forum like it and we (I know i will) will try to answer it to the best of our ability.

I'll have to disagree with Mandor on this one. Get a book. In fact, get several. Savini has a couple - Grand Illusion and Grand Illusion II, also called Bizarro, I think. These books are a great place to begin, however, many advances have been made since the release of these books, so check Amazon for more recent publications. Another great resource is the magazine, Make Up Artist, and the DVD mag, Movie FX. This mag is only on DVD and sells for around $10 an issue at any major bookstore. Every isssue contains step-by-step video of how-to create different effects, as well as interviews with today's prominent FX artists. Also, in an effort to "share the love," another great source of info is www.themonsterlab.com. They have a messageboard packed full of pro advice. Good people. Hope this helps, Jeff.
