Anyone know the the name of an Italian horror film director?

I recently saw a Showtime/HBO special with all the major horror film directors, Carpenter, King, Craven, etc.

They included this one Italian director and showed some surrealistic crazy images from his movies. Good stuff and I wanted to rent his movies, but I can't remember his name.
