Okay, I've searched the forum and couldn't find anything about this movie so let me enlighten those who may never have even heard of this film.
And that my undead friends, is a good thing. I've been after seeing this movie for absolutely friggin' ages so naturally when I got my chance to purchase the dvd I jumped at the chance.
Kinda wishing I hadn't of jumped so far...
If you've checked out their website (www.zombieplanetmovie.com) you wouldn't be wrong to be impressed. The design, the style of the site is above most other independent (I prefer that to amateur) sites; BUT DO NOT BE FOOLED. This style does not translate through to the film.
So, anyway, the premise of the film is simple; In the near future, the world has been ravaged by a plague caused by a new carb-burning diet (I kid you not). This diet makes the dietee (is that even a word?!) hungry. Very, very hungry until the only thing that will quench this desire is flesh. And it doesn't even have to be human (one scene depicts a man finding his wife happily munching the family dog). But this is all back-story.
As per formula, the last surviving humans have gathered together in tribes; the 'Dregs' - the name says it all - and the 'Upper Class' - ditto. Life for the Dregs isn't easy - being the prey of both zombies and the Upper class can't be fun - but then they meet Kane. A man so mysterious absolutely NONE of his past is explained - unless you count one dream sequence that made no sense whatsoever. Think Wolverine (for character) mixed with the long haired one from early nineties duo Charles & Eddie (for looks).
Needless to say the two tribes meet in a pointless - and unexciting - action scene (and I use the term 'action' loosely).Lleader of the Upper Class, Adam (who wouldn't look uneasy in a Guns N' Roses tribute act) is impressed with Kane and tries to woo him over to the Dark Side. Or something like that. It's very hard to keep paying attention to something like this. Anyway, it turns out that Adam is working somewhat for the military who are keen on securing Kane for themselves. For what reason either I can't remember or they didn't explain. i believe it's the latter.
And that's pretty much it.
So why did I buy it? I'm staring at the cover and asking myself the exact same thing. But then again, I own Children of the Living Dead and the two Camp Blood movies so I guess I'm a sucker for sh*t films. And I use that term loosely.
Zombie Planet seems to have been shot on the cheapset format that they could have gotten their hands on - which is a shame seeing as the make-up and locations used were fairly decent and would've benefitted from a better format than video. Take for example, Dead Life (http://www.schottenfilmworks.com/dead%20Life.htm). Shot on Super 8 - and while not the greatest film on earth, it certainly looks better than a lot out there. But format is the least of this film's problems.
The acting. Where did they find these people? I certainly hope they didn't audition these poor souls; 'cause if that was the best they could get, wouldn't it have been better to have shut down production until people with more 'chops' came along? Still, you work with who you can get, eh?
And what is with the script? Needed more work boys. But who am I really to complain? They have made their film and it's out there for all to see and so what if it wasn't my cup of tea? I'm sure some people will dig the hell out of it; And THAT'S what is fun about movies. And I admire anybody that goes out there and does it - it ain't easy.
So in conclusion - yes, it's a bad film but I would recommend that you see it. Because if you don't the proposed sequel (Zombie Planet 2 - Adam's Revenge) won't have the cash it will so desperatley need for the greatest thing a film can have - Development.
Oh, it would help if I rated this thing wouldn't it? So, erm.. 2 out of 5, how's that? That's about 40% right? Barely just a pass in my book. So, thank you for sitting through the rantings of a disappointed viewer and feel free to berate me any which way you desire...
