I have /$50,00 to shoot my movie. Would I be better off to shoot my film using 16mm, Super 16 or using a 3 DV camera setup, using XL1 or another good alternative?

Is the Five Thousand or Fifty thousand? Is that your equipment budget, or whole budget? If it's your equipment budget, then you might have enough to make a short 16mm film, but you would be able to be more experimental with an XL1s. That way, you could get a mattebox, filters and lighting equipment, etc. It all depends on where you want to put your money, what area (photography, actors, sound, special effects) that you want to focus on and put more money into. The question you have to ask yourself is: What do I want out of this? Renting 16s are expensive (about $350 to $500 a day, not counting on the insurance you need to spend on them and the shipping costs. If you want more time to work on the project, I'd suggest DVC like the XL1s.
