Never stop the camera, capture every moment of everything no matter how much people yell at you.

Yeah, a great subject is probably the most important thing. Or at least a subject that contains a story or information that you are eager to tell the world.
Probably wouldn't hurt to do a bit of reading on the subject either. Sure you're gonna find out things from interviews and stuff but you can't just come to an interview without knowing what the hell you're gonna talk about.
Also, find out what you think about the subject? Are you completely neutral or do you have an opinion? You would think that a documentary would only tell the truth without having an opinion of it's own, but I mean successful ones like Farenheit 9/11 isn't exactly neutral.
That's all I can think of. Good luck!

Yeah, those are some things to look into but if I can give any advice...I would give this. Try to make your DOC (as i like to call it) as stable as you want it. Camera wise of course. Ever since the blaire witch everyone thinks DOCs are just a handheld experience. Just dont try to fall into something like that unless thats what your going for. Your DOC can look better than most Major Motion Pictures If you wanted it to. Hopefully you can use that advice...Good LUCK!
