i was woundering if anyone knows what the law is on using characters from a film that already exists such as fredy from nighmare on elme street. is using them in your own film that you plan on selling illegal?

In a word... yes. If you are making a film, you are best to avoid using copyrighted characters or music (which is to say, almost all characters and music). If you are intending to sell the finished film, then it is even more likely that you will recieve attention from the filmakers and their lawyers. Fan-films are generally left alone, because they are distributed for free, and they are made by the fans, but the moment you start selling them... watch out!

AJ's right. It's illegal as long as you sell it. If its just going to be given out free or shown online than its fine.
You could always make up a character that is like Freddy or what other character(s) you want to use. Sort of like a homage (I think). Just use a similar plot and similar characters.
