I'm doing a zombie short on no budget, not expecting a lot out of it as it's got a 1 1/2 week filming schedule, but I've got a scene where a main character loses his weapon and supplies down a steep hill and goes to get it he goes around a tree and two zombies surprise him. I'm hoping for a jump scene that actually works, but I can't find anything anywhere about how to set one up. Does anyone have any good resources or advice? Thanks! This is my first "scary" movie so to speak so any other advice I'm open to.

I think the best "jump scenes" are the ones that are most unexpected, like when the guy's severed head surprises Hooper in Jaws. Maybe when recovering his supplies, he comes upon a zombie lying on the ground that appears to be dead, but it tries to grab or bite his leg when he takes a closer look. After he unloads a full magazine into it and appears to be out of danger, that's when he gets jumped by a second zombie from behind. I guess two zombies behind a tree could also work, but it also sounds like a planned ambush -- something I'm guessing most zombies are incapable of doing.

That's a really good idea. Thanks for the input. I think I will do something along those lines.
