OK, this isn't actually Horror, but it does have monsters in it.
I've started working on a script that will be a remake of the 1903 classic Le Voyage Dans La Lune. What I am doing is taking the perspective that it was Georges Milies that actully took a journey to the moon and upon returning to earth wanted to make a film about his voyage. I am also looking at it with the idea that Georges Milies had CGI available to him. The finished film will probably run around 30minutes (same as the original) It will be a period piece and will be extremely heavy in the effect arena (just like the original). I'm going to set up a small website later to display some the designs for the film and have a progress report there also. I'm hoping to shoot the live action portions of it this fall and possible have it ready for limited distribution and festivals by the spring.
Comments welcome as always. David

That sounds like a great idea Dave These kinds of films are pretty much perfect for remaking, its a hundred years old, so there's no copyright problems (at least not here in Europe) and its a quirky piece of fantasy that is rich with iconic imagery. I like your intention to make it a period piece. Regarding the CGI effects, are you planning to do them in the style of the original or do you plan to modernise them?

The science used for the CGI imagery will be based on turn of the century designs (1900's) with a little bit of modern concepts thrown in to 'sell' the technology as some what plausible. I already have a design for the projectile ship and for the selenites. I'll be posting additional info on a small website soon for anyone who is interested in looking at some of my designs. I think what I have in mind would make Milies proud. It's certainly going to be fun to do. I've been thinking about this for about a year now and timing seems right to try and do it now.
I'm going to film it in color with a full sound track but when I edit it there will be two versions made from the footage. One will be full color/sound crisp DV and the second will be made to look like b/w film and it will be silent with a period style music sound track. I may take select scenes for the second versions and color tint them like Milies would do to give it more of a period feel. If everything works out, both versions will be available on a DVD.

What program are you using for the CGI creatures on your website? What about the spaceship? They look good.

I do most of my 3D work in two programs. My design program is RayDream Studio. The program I do most all my animation in is called Poser. To a lesser degree I also use a program called Organica. For other CGI work I use Adobe AfterEffects and a variety of other programs.

The Smashing Pumpkins semi-remade this for their video Tonight, Tonight. I cant give you an exact address but I'm sure theres sites out there with info on how they did it. It ended up bieing one of the most expensive music videos of all time. Heres a link to a still from it: www.netphoria.org/videos/tt.jpgHeres a link to it (its real media, sorry I could only find it like this): www.netphoria.org/videos/tonight2.rm

Actually the Pumpkins did more La Lune à un mètre or The Astronomer's Dream which was made a few years before Le Voyage Dans La Lune. It was a very impressive music video and one of my favorites from the Pumpkins. I'm taking a completely different approach to it than they did though and can do it for a whole lot less. LOL My pockets aren;t that deep.

No need to apologize, Melies made many films about the moon but Le Voyage is the most recognized and popular. Considering he made between 500 and 800 films in his career, he was sure to begin repeating himself. LOL Actually what I'd like to do is a series of films placing the character of George Melies into his own stories as if they actually happened and alter on he made movies about his adventures. Kind of like what they did for Jules Verne in that TV series.
