OK I consider myself someone who loves to write, and I am just getting into the whole screenwriting thing. I love horror, and wouldnt mind one day selling my scripts to someone, but eventually, I'd like to take a stab at writing and directing myself. At the low-budget level, what do u all consider to be the "must-have" tools of the trade? I'm talking about equipment, etc., just to get started on a short film? Where can one find the equipment cheap or at least for rent? Any further advice/input would be greatly appreciated!

Dude,
When it comes to writing, I split my time between paper & writing stick, and my word processor. I usually write notes & inspirations as they come, and keep all that pertain to a particular project in a seperate file folder. Sooner or later, I have enough stray inspirations stored up to write the actual story or script.
Regarding equipment for your future film career, my advice is-- whatever you can find! I bought a bottom-of-the-line minidv camcorder for a few hundred bucks, but I could have gotten it cheaper used, or I could have gone with a less expensive format, too. I highly suggest you read Robert Rodriguez's amazing book, "Rebel Without a Crew." It was a good reminder to me that all I really needed to get started practicing my craft was the cheapest camera I could find and a few willing victims-- Er, I mean volunteers-- to be the actors.
Good luck!

hi im just starting out writing small scripts, and am just about to buy some equipment, i would say essentials would be:
camera, of course. a small lighting kit, 3 lights to light your scenes. instead of using onboard camera sound buy a seperate boom mountable mic. if shooting on dv, a fast computer would help.
best place i would say, would be to search ebay, i have found lots of bargains on there, maybe its not the top gear but it will suit the purpose.

Bill Martell's website(scriptsecrets.net) is a great resource for aspiring screenwriters and filmmakers. You can also sign up for his monthly e-mail newsletter and receive all kinds of screenwriting tips. He's written a lot of B-grade stuff -- mostly action but horror and science fiction as well, so he knows what he's talking about.
