Been lurking around this post for a few minutes, noticed alot of people asking for ideas or plot twist and such. I would be more interested in trying to avoid cliches or common mistakes that many writers make. What do you think are some of the more common mistakes filmmakers continue to make and what don't you like about films in general. Here are a few things that get me a bit angry: 1. Prestine and idylic view of small town America. You know, like Sweet Home Alabama and Doc Hollywood. Of course with horror films, it's the opposite. 2. Mental illness in films are portrayed as either the flip side of genius or Norman Bates. Both pretty extreme examples. 3. this kind of good vs evil crap that has crept back into films. I think the heroes of many 90s films were a bit ambiguous but since the rise in interest of Lucas, Harry Potter, Tolkien, and comic book franchises things have been pretty much black and white. 4. This is my own personal quirk I suppose. Overwritting. Watched Underworld recently. Writers spent so much time setting up the socio-political world of the supernatural but I got the filling that they were just piling so much junk on top of everything, by the end of the movie I just got bored. I think they failed to adequately explain all that was happening and it was just a mess.

Overwriting in horror and SciFi is a common problem. When you are dealing with a complex story line it is important to be able to fully design a backstory so that 'you' as the writer know why certain plot events are happening but sometimes it is not necessasry to explain those things to the viewr. Some writers just don't get that. They fall into one of two problems: 1 - They have too much story and are trying to set up a franchise so they want as much back story told so that they can sell the franchise or 2 - They don't have much story and try to fill it out with back story and end up padding a 30 minute short into 90+ minute feature that is boring. Either way they should have look more closely at their back story and found their film there and not with the film they ended up making.
