can anyone help with some advice. I have a Dazzle dvc 150 with Pinnacle Studio 8 as software and am having a horrible time with this software. Should I just throw it away and get a new capture device and software or what? I have a GL-2, and am wondering how to capture with Premiere? I'm new to all of this, Studio 8 was easy enough to learn but it too glitchy, Premiere is way harder to understand.

You may want to try Avids FreeDV software. It's not as robust as their flagship software but it is easy to learn and does a lot. And it's FREE to download from the Avid site. May also want to take a look at the Sony ScreenBlast software. I've used both of these and both are fairly easy to learn. ScreenBlast cost 99.95.
I prefer Avid XpressDV but it'll set you back a bundle and is not for the weekend video warrior. I took course to learn how to use it and have been using it for two years and still I am learning new things about it.

I reckon Premiere and Avid are probably around the same, in terms of interface complexity. It is definitely worth taking the time to sit down and learn the software.
Premiere is the software I use on my home machine, I haven't used any AvidDV but I'd be surprised if their free software was as useful as Premiere. ;D
You don't mention what sort of problems you are having, is it glitchy or just slow?

When I say glitchy, I mean the program Studio 8 freezes up ALL the time, then once it freezes it corruts the video file, then I'm screwed. Is there a way to bypass the DVC 150 and capture strait from the camera via IEEE 1394 port with firewire and DV? I'm not sure how to do this, I think I have the ability to capture without the DVC, but I'm really new to this capturing and editing stuff. I'm not above spending some money, I just don't want to spend 100s of dollars on hardware or software that is going lock up all the time. I just dropeed 200 bucks on this Dazzle thingy, I would have rather spent more money on something that will deffinately work. Can you guys help me out?

In my setup I use an Adaptec Firewire interface (about $40) for capture interface to my DV camera. WinXP found and loaded the drivers for the interface no problem. I have three softwares I use for editing depending on what I'm doing. I used Ulead VideoStudioDV, Sony Screenblast, and Avid XpressDV. For some reason Avid is the only one that the generic capture drivers REFUSE to work with my camera. Stangely the Avid FreeDV worked fine but it didn't have the features I wanted (it only supports 2 audio streams). So I use the Ulead or Sony software to capture. Both do a very good job and have no problem finding my camera. My system setup is a 1ghz system with 256meg of memory, 100mhz FSB, 32meg AGP graphics card, and about 80gig of drive storage. I use this for video editing and 3D graphics design and animation and DVD Burning. Running WinXP I have never experience a serious lockup.

Thanks for your help guys, I went out today and bought one of those firewires, so now I can capture, now I just have to find an easy editing software that renders to mpeg2 at full quality, so it looks good on DVD. My PC is a little faster all around, so this should work for me too. I only lack in the hard drive area, which I shall solve this week with a 100+ gig drive, this should help me, maybe I can have a nice bonfire with the Dazzle capture, lol.

One small question. What DVD authoring program do/will You use? Most DVD burners come with some sort of simple authoring program, and they can usually take AVI and what not and convert it to MPEG-2 streams. So it is not necessary to have a editing software that can do this, as long as it can output AVIs. This said, the mpeg-encoders of the cheap authoring programs aren't that good all the time, both quality-wise and compliance-wise. On the other hand I guess the same can be said for the encoders that are built in (or bundled with) the editing software - though I have not heard it talked about as much. I run Premiere 6.0 (never got around to upgrade), and I like it. I haven't tried many others, never found the need to do so... Premiere 6.5 and above support MPEG-2 encoding (and even come with Sonic DVDit LE authoring program if I remember correctly). I can not comment on the quality of this encoder, but I guess it is about everything else. I would instead go for the TMPGEnc stand-alone MPEG encoder, which is according to several people one of the absolute best MPEG encoders around. The free version does not come with MPEG-2 support though. The reason for this is that I already have this encoder, and it can be configured to integrate quite okay with Premiere... Bottom line is this: You can probably get by with the stuff that came with Your DVD burner for authoring and encoding. Any editing suite will probably be able to toss out a file that can be transcoded by the authoring software into something very compliant (if not 100%). From there it is just a matter of putting some more money in to the project and get what You really want (if You didn't already): Premiere for editing (or Vegas video which I've heard good things about) TMPEnc for encoding (which can be bought bundled with DVDLab for $128) Encore for a full fledged authoring program ($$$$) or DVDLab for a cheaper alternative (will need an encoder though) This is where I would end up, but that's mainly because I'm already halfway there so ... Good luck! /Rico

Thank alot Rico for the info, I'm going to try to get some of that software, right now my PC is bogging down, so I can't capture, too many dropped frames. Now I'm back to re-doing my PC then I get hardware, then I'll be able to get this stuff going, d**n, I just want to make movies, lol.
