Since no one seems to have started a thread here yet I guess I will.
Obviously one key element to any horror film is blood (the more the better). So guys, what is the best way to make fake blood. I'm ultra low budget, I grab as many hot sauce packets as I can from Taco Bell.

Karo syrup and red food coloring is the best by far. But if it is a black and white film who cares what color it is. I wonder why food coloring is so d**n expensive?

If using the kyro syrup and red food coloring be sure to add a little photoflow (a photo processing chemical) to the mix so that it seep into clothing properly like real blood. Of course if it is to be used in the mouth don't use photoflow unless you want a sick or dead actor. Also, if shooting in B/W use Hersey's chocolate syrup (they used five gallons of it in the original Psycho for the shower scene).

Great tips so far guys. Here is a question for you all....
What would you use in a pool?
As in blood is suppose to be in the pool. The pool has a filter and I don't want to ruin that at all. Any thoughts?

I'd fill a water balloon with red food coloring or rite dye and attach an estes rocket igniter to the side of it with duct tape and sink it to the bottom of the pool with a brick with wires attached to the igniter so that it could be set off to burn a hole in the ballon. When the food coloring or dye hit the water it would begin to disperse and rise to the surface as a large red spot in the water. Both the food color and dye should pass through the filter without harming it but the pool water will end up pink until it can be drained and replaced. :-)

Does anyone have any ideas about recipes that WILL NOT stain clothes, skin, etc? I understand that some of these recipes may temporarily stain skin, but I've found that some of them may permanently stain (and therefore ruin) clothing. Any ideas?

i think you can add some liquid soap to the recipe and it will be easier to remove, but i've never tried it.

Get your costumes from Goodwill.
Blood stains. Fake blood stains. Practically everything with a little red dye in it stains.

To make alot of really cheap blood get lots of really sh*tty cheap washing detergent and mix in food coloring untill you get the color you want. Once we used this recipie to make a whole bath full of blood for less than $10 addmitidally we did mix a bit of water in too but it was very convincing blood for the price.
