Okay - I wanna know how to make a head explode. I don't care about it looking good, and I have literally no money to spend - would a blown up balloon half full of red colouring/fake blood work? (as you can probably tell, this isn't for a film - I just love gore) Another other suggestions will be received gratefully.

If you have no money, then drawing a smiley face on a balloon might be the best route to go down.
You will need a decent head cast of your actor, or at least a fairly life-like head made from some suitably fleshy substance, a bunch of fake-blood, some bit's of 'brain', oatmeal, offall or whatever, and a medium maroon to add the actual bang.
A human head is a difficult thing to make explode, but if you are careful and plan your shots properly, you can probably do it without needing to spend too much.
Personally, I would suggest getting yourself a couple of suitable gore movies if you only want to see the effect, Scanners and the original Dawn are two that spring to mind, both featuring exploding heads.

Well i had this same idea for a movie i was making and what you can do is.....(i had no money either)
Go to a local party giant or city and ask for one of those stira foam heads they hold masks on Then carve the back of the head out and put 2 rocket chargers(make sure there held down well or it will fly out the head and may hurt someone) (anything in the C's). Face the little holes toward the front face and o yeah carve it out ALOT so its practcally a half inch between. Get a mold of you actor make it with liquid latex (so its soft) touch it up with makeup put some blood packets by the chargers burs tand KABOOM BLOOD AND STUFF FLTIGN EVERYWHERE. P.S put some bread i nthe blood packets so when it turn to mush it look liek brains
Reply back and let me no how it went

You can get fashion head manniquins from beauty schools for free. they are already lifelike with hair and everything, just a little small and usually female. if you dig the foam out of the middle of them they are just latex and you could fill it with whatever brain matter you prefer (I like cranberry sauce and spaggetti). use an m80 to explode it if you can get one.

Popping the balloon is a great idea - if you can't get squibs or anything else that is explosive. The guts flying around seems to be what you are looking for. Without any money cooked thin yet wide pasta into you blood mix really works nice for the chunk effect. also instead of popping the balloon with a pin, over inflate it until it pops, if you have a wig you can hide the air intake there - since it's not for a film - I don't think it matters. There's also a trick if you can keep filling the balloon with the blood mix until it pops would probably maximize your gore factor. Sean Hope Director of Creative Design www.hopeworksfx.com

I have recently done an exploding head for my film and it turned out pretty d**n good especially in slow motion.
what i did was got a balloon and stuck loads of newspaper on it with pva glue (paper mache) then once i had a balloon shape i painted it peach. i filled it up with guts (toilet role soaked in fake blood) and shoved a firework in the back so it couldn't fly about. i then put a mask on top so you could only see the hair and i lit the firework.KABOOOOM!!! Guts came flying straight at the camera...truly spectacular if done right!
