Hey everyone, first-time poster here. Anyways, I'm set to start shooting a zombie short in about two weeks, and I have one scene I'd love to keep in, where the hero smashes a zombie in the head with an axe. A few seconds later, he chops the head off another zombie.
Now, my real problem lies in that I'm not allowed to actually kill my actors. I've heard something about canteloupes, but I can't imagine how that would work. Any ideas?

you can get realistic fashion heads from cosmetology schools. The only problem is they are kinda small and they are usually only female. either that or you can get male styrofoam wig forms and paint them and apply hair. Or hell even a hlloween mask trhat looks vaguely zombie. Anyway just hollow one of these out and fill it with cranberry sauce or whatever you think brain matter would look like, put it on a dummy and chop the sh*t out of it with an axe.

Doesn't it pissss you off that hardly anyone replies to a request to make a head crushing effect, but there a numerous replies about something as boring as a bullet hit.

No, because we are under control of our tempers. Half of the 'squib' replies are you b*tching about how dull they are. Grow up.

That and the fact that it's a lot easier to make a bullet hit than crush a head.

That was my point exactly multi. The two things I can't stand wasting time on is bullet hits and how to make fake blood. There are a lot more impressive special effects from household items. also, I wasn't talking to you scitek, (edited by admin).

Dunno about using a canteloupe... maybe that was to get the sound fx for such a shot?
A lot depends on the way you envisage your effect being shown, if you want some kind of slow-motion close-up showing great detail of your lead actor then that is a lot more difficult than simply having the camera shoot from behind and edit quickly as a store mannequin loses its head.
You might also consider shooting some green-screen and doing the actual lopping in post, it'd be possible to do some really nice cg work on a desktop pc these days.
It all depends on your budget, and how well the shot needs to hold together.
Personally I'd go for the full-head mask suggestion that goriddle made.
I guess he's useful for something after all!! ;D

id say focus on the guy doin the smashing, get his emotion, have him smash something down, add a sound effects and then just make a smashed up head and film that. You could even(when he smashes something down) have blood splatter up).

I like the mask idea. i think combined with some quick editing, that could work. anyone know where to find a mask like that though? Google didn't turn up anything, but maybe i was just searching for the wrong thing.

the foam head idea sounds like it may work.
no bashing heads over this subject guys . and if you do dont forget the camera. we could use the footage..
anyway here is my idea get a mask perferably a cheap mask one made of thin latex. score the inside lightly brush in a thin layer of plaster of paris. so it supports the structure of the mask. when thats dry fill this head in bags of hamburger yougurt . and you know what else to fill this with i shouldnt have to tell you use your imagination.
if this process is too complicated i think loyd kaufman said he used watermelons filled with stuff.. anyway take care have fun. psyco

I know how to smash a head and its quite effective. You get a melon ok and get everything inside of it-out. fill the melon with blood, brains etc with a pipe. paint the melon peach and put a wig on it (a wig familiar looking to the actor) and do a quick shot of you smashing it. i've done it and the audience love it. It's got to be a quick shot though so you don't give the effect away. It's been done countless times in TROMA films. if you haven't heard of troma visit www.troma.coma brilliant film making site.

I did the honors of filling a canteloupe with cranberry sauce for troma once. I am sure there are more people here than just me that have been the toxic avenger at troma events too. Come on guys swallow your pride and admit it haha.
