a character in my current project is missing a leg from the knee down. He has a very unusual fake leg that needs to be visible. He has to walk and also kick using the leg. What do you fellas suggest? I have a few tricks up my sleeve, but its all going to require some complicated camera work.

I wouldn't know what to suggest, without knowing your budget, what the current wooden prosthetic looks like. whether you are going to use a croma stocking (blue or green) or just digitally erase or not film the real leg. If you are using an amputee actor that's missing a leg your problems and complicated camera angles would no longer be needed.

If it has to be thinner that the actuall characters leg then green screen is the way to go. Or If this is a digital shoot then you can use any odd colour that wouldn't normally blend in with the background (like dayglo orange). This makes it alot easier for the computer FX guy to remove that colour value and and add in the fake leg. You will still have to build this fake leg and get a bunch of pictures of it (actually it's up to the computer guy to do that) so he can build a 3d model in the computer.
So to pull it off, as you may or may not know, just paint up the leg to where you need it cut off and then have the actor come up with some sort of limp so it looks like he is walking with a fake leg. Then just film as usual and let the computer guy take care of the rest.

I do have chroma capabilities, but I am not sure that is the way to go. My actor isn't an amputee, but there is a guy in town who is an amputee and also happens to be a expert martial artist. I would have considered him first, but I don't know him and I certainly wouldn't wan't to piss him off!

wait a sec! does the guy have to put on the leg if so make a leg that would fit over the actors leg . so his real leg would be inside it. if the shot is he is putting the leg on, hide the actors leg and make him a leg cap. then Cut to the actor with the phoney leg on his. if not tie the actors leg back put on the phoney leg where the leg should be. and use trhe angles where you wouldnt see the leg tied back. get it its kinda confusing . i hope you get it. and it shouldnt be afeet(bad) psyco

Your suggestion is closest to what I had already considered using Psycho. I have actually been working on designs for a harness to do this. The only problem is how incredibly uncomfortable it would be to tie someone's leg like that. The actor I am using is incredibly athletic so there are some possiblities, but another problem is the balancing on the fake leg. It is a very skinny fake leg, like a pirate's. I would definitely use chroma, but it would cost more time and money than I am willing to spend on this sequence.

Try to make the shots short . so the actor is as comfortable as posible. or give him a cane ive seen people using canes who have been missing limbs and wouldnt be silly. they used a cane for the charactor in forest gump look at the movie for reference.

If he fits the role or if you want to just show the leg, you could always ask. Take him out for a drink and discuss it. The worst that he could say is no.
I've used amputees before. I have found that most are very comfortable and feel honored that they can be in a film.

I think I am just going to go with the original actor unless he cancels. As much as I would like to use the amputee, it would be dificult to ask him to devote so much time for so little pay. He also has a pretty busy schedule being a karate teacher and all.

this depends on how many times you need to show the effect. if you are showing it once or twice - you can always ask the Karate Teacher to do a camo, still offer him the "little pay" plus offer the free advertizing for the school he works for. what I mean by camo is basically body double, use you actor for all the other parts and use the teacher for only the close ups on the amputee. This will take up less editing on templates to croma and if shot correctly you could actually have people believe that your actor is the amputee it's would be easy for the karate teacher to kick with the fake leg.
