I always liked 'Return of the Living Dead'. I remember it came out the same time Day did and I thought at the time Return was a superior film compared to Romero's movie. But I haevn't seen it in a month of sundays .. gotta wonder if it still holds up.
But I would put Dawn at the top of my list. The original. Havent seen the remake ... shudder ...

The return of the living kiked ass!!! I enjoyed Return of the living part 2 aswell. I didn't like the remake to dawn of the dead, it just didn't seem like a zombie film to me.
Oh yeah, Shaun of the Dead has got to be up there with the best.

i just couldnt bring myself to see the Dawn remake. I can't imagine it has the kind of subtext that made the original so unique. Just product.
Return .. I just thought it moved at a great place, kind of reminded me of an E.C. comic come to life in a way. Loved what they said at the beginning about the Indian skull farms.

I saw the Dawn remake - if u can call it a remake. It was enjoyable, as long as u forgot about the original. Personally, I prefer Night of the Living Dead to Dawn. And yes, Shaun of the Dead does deserve to up there with the best. It's also in my top 3 comedy films - along with This Is Spinal Tap and The Big Lebowski.

I think zombie films are very popular with independant film making because of the variety you have with zombies. You can do all sorts with zombie films and you can sometimes easily pull them off.

yeah, and zombies can translate into loads of different genres - there's the obvious one, horror - but also comedy, drama and even musicals...

I'm not surprised why most film makers make zombie films to start off with cuz they are fun and in a way, traditional. I must admit, zombies are cool to be creative with. ;D

romero's dead trilogy by far... because they deal with more problems than flesh eating zombies
the remake of night of the living dead was very well done... dawn on the other hand was nothing but an action movie...
hail jackson's gorefest dead alive/braindead

I recently went to Memorabillia and stumbled upon the austrailian zombie flick 'Undead' and the fx in it are pretty impressive but not one of my favourites. Its not just a zombie flick too its also an alien type movie, i wouldn't put it up there with the A* zombie flicks such as 'Braindead' etc.

Dawn of the Dead 1978 was my favorite. Romero's classic was perfected with such style and grace, that in my opinion it serves its purpose even today as one of the scariest horror films of all time. The relationship between Peter and Roger was so amazing that you could compare to it to Batman and Robin. With the demise of Rogers character, you felt greif for him yet; you were happy to see him die, so that he wouldn't have to live as a zombie.
It took a great team to make Dawn happen, and the great Tom Savini was superb behind the scenes as well as in the movie. Night of the living dead stands in a class by itself, with a heart pounding ending that does away with all the rest.
I am currently working on my first feature in horrror screen writing, about a Dr. living in the rural mountains of Catskill NY, who feeds young college students to his undead corpse. This is just a spur of an idea. The film is based in the early 80's. I always wanted to create my own zombie film. But what I did not want to do is duplicate Romero, nor Fulci or Lovecraft, these guys are my heroes. I wanted to create my own original idea in the zombie genre.
