The secret to "not showing the gore" is quick cuts (a.k.a. jump cuts). In Psycho you see the knife, the woman, the shower, a silhouette, blood going down the drain, etc. Most people will tell you it's one of the most chilling deaths scenes they ever saw when in reality they didn't see anything at all.
To achieve said effect is up to the editor, not the fx guy. quick split second shots of different things will lead the audience to believe they've seen something when they actually haven't. There are some rules though. The shots have to be long enough so that the conscious mind can make sense of what you are seeing. Also the montage of images have to follow a cohesive pattern. In other words that one scene itself has to be it's own little story with a begining, a middle and an end in the right place.

I can't really remember any off the top of my head. I guess it's also because i thought i saw something i didn't. But just look up any old black and white movies where you're sure someone is gonna die, like a gangster movie or something. alot of the time you will see montage sequences or even the whole shadow thing and sometimes blood splattering on the wall. Back then nobody would have dreamed of putting death on screen so you should find what you are looking for
The surrealists, on the other hand were quite fond of camera tricks and special effects of all sorts. Dali, Buñel and Cocteau, who are all very good film makers in their own right, their movies are a great source for low budget and in camera effects. Just a little fyi on that last part.
