Hello, I am new here..looks like a cool board. I am into filming and everything that comes with it.
I don't know how to do a good slit throat..it's killing me. I want to show the knife cutting the flesh and being able to expose it a bit.
The other night I poured a line of liquid latex on a plastic cutting board, and sponged another one on so it would be a lot thinner. The idea was to soak the thin layer in blood, put skin tone makeup on the thick one, have the bloody one underneath, put on neck, and cut.
It's much too strong to cut though. I was thinking, maybe I could pre-cut the slit, then when the knife goes over it might look like it's happening for the first time?
Any ideas will be helpful! Thanks!

Here is how is usually do a slit throat. First you will need a knife. Use whatever knife you want and dull it it down, scrap it against cement, grind it with a dremel, whatever...If you are to afraid to run it over your own arm then why would you use it in a slit throat effect?
On to the slit throat. You'll need eyeliner pencils (black bugandy and red), latex and blood. Using the black eyeliner pencil draw in the shape of a cut (basicaly thin and pointy on the ends and thicker in the middle). Now stipple on a layer of latex and wait till it dries. Do the same with the burgandy and another layer of latex and the red and another layer of latex. Now add some blood, not too much. Now fold the surrounding skin over on itself. You actor will now have to keep his head down so that the entire thing does not come undone.
When the camera rolls take your knife and place it at the begining of the fold and move you actor neck slowly upwards in a diagonal while running the kinfe across. The latex and blood will have stuck together and now as the actor raises his head the latex and blood will begin to open with all kinda of nasty stringy bits and it will look like the throat is being cut open. I will try to maybe post a video in the next couple of days so you can get an idea of what it looks like. If you have any questions just email me or message me and i will try to answer it as best i can.

"Mommy's little Monster" has a good inexpensive gag there. I would like to offer more alternatives.
Alternative 1: There are gag knives that you can make or buy that have a bulb with blood in them in the handle. The knide has a blade that retracts into itself and when it does it oens the floodgate for the blood.
Alternative 2: There is a product by Kryolan called AB Blood that when invisible ingredient A is smeared on say...a neck and invisible ingredient B is on a dull knife edge and the two come in contact...voila Blood.
Alternative 3: If cutting is the important part and you want to SEE the knife penetrate the skin, I suggest you look at your shotlist and cut from the actor to a prepared head and neck constructed of Gelatin and painted by a pro. This is the most expensive route and can easily set you back 3-400 dollars if not more.
