I was just wondering if anybody had any good realistic ways to make a head that will be crushed/stomped? Alginate is way to expensive, espically to make a hollow cast. Does anybody have any other ideas to make it so it will atleast look like someones face (maybe even if it doesnt look like the actors)?
Melons could work, but I want it to look like a head to get a good close-up of it. Wax maybe?

I had to do that for a movie once. What I did was buy one of those foam heads that you use to put masks on. I hollowed it out but not to much. I then added blood and other effects to make it look like brain and everything else. Then I sealed the bottom off. You don't want to hollow it out to much cause if you do when the head gets stomped on it will get crushed to easily and look to fake. Then I added some wax all around the foam head. When that dried I added some latex. I also added this stuff I had laying around. It was this stuff that hardened but was rubbery. Sort of like what a mask is made out of. You don't have to add it but it gave a good effect. Then to finish it off I airbrushed it to make it look like skin and I added hair and fake eyebrows and eyelashes. For the eyes I made my own out the left over foam and then I added wax and latex and airbrushed them. I also made a little pocket in the hole where the eyes go and added a blood pack so when the head would get crushed the blood pack would break and the blood would come out around the eyes. The effect looks good and if it is done right you could get a close up of the face.

Hey thanks. Also, If anybody has any tips on another head destruction aswell. I have a scene where barbedwire is wrapped around a guys head, and then it is pulled and the head cuts all the way through in 3 places. I want to show a good shot of this one aswell. Anyone have any ideas?

that would be hard without a lifecast unless you are an awesome sculpter. knox geletin would be a good material to use for this effect.

When I did it, it worked perfectly for me. It didn't look like the actor very much but the dead was getting stomped quickly so you really didn't notice and it was a fair distance away but still close enough to see. If you need it really close and have to see the actor them you might have to try something else but it worked for me and remember it's for a low budget film. Nothing fancy or expensive. Just something simple that gives a good effect in the end.

I would be the first guy in the room to advocate doing things the cheap way. I did a alginate face cast when I did this effect though. It was cheap because it was just the face. To get the basic shape of the head I used plaster stips to get a rough mold of the actors head and then glue the latex face to it. the actor just happened to be wearing a wig and a hoody too, so that helped. When I think of it now it could have been done even cheaper though.
