when making blood i was told to use red food colour powder instead of liquid food colouring as it won't stain ? can anyone confirm this as true ? before i go hunting the shops for it.

I sincerely doubt that it is true. Food dye is food dye, regardless of whether it is powder or liquid. If you are not using the blood in anyone's mouth or near their eyes, add a few drops of laundry detergent, as it will make the blood clean out of fabrics and sets much much easier.

Jell-o is good for chunks of blood comming out of someones mouth, like in slasher films aswell as being part of the blood. Karo syrup mouth full of jello and a little bit of food coloring for, well color!

Karo syrup mouth full of jello and a little bit of food coloring for, well color! That is an exceelnt and very cheap effect. It's looks good for exploding brains from a gunshot wound to the head too. Just splatter them on a wall behind the actor, add sound fx and bam!

Another good substitute for brains is dry cat (or dog) food soaked in a blood mixture for several days. I always soak the contents in a sealed container as it will stain whatever it touches. And another hint for making "Karo" blood look more real is to add corn starch to the mix. It makes the "blood" more opaque and realistic.

I never tried the corn starch thing, I'll give it a try. Thanks!

I just used the corn starch thing for our short "Where has all the Luahgter Gone?"! I used flour instead but it turned out wonderfully! I added chunks of unflavored geletin as well. Check it out: www.reelsplatter.com/clownsuicide.wmv

Nice short, Mike I'll have to keep you in mind for the next short film festival I do. I always run them, but the booking is a long time coming as of late. In other words, don't call me... I'll call you ;D
