Hey guys, I came across this web site and I must say this is a great site!! So just wanted to say hey and Im glad your here lol. Anyways I have some effects I could use help on. Im trying to figure out how to cut someone in half and then throw their two halves to different sides of the set. The scene is the person will be suspended in the air levitating and then the two halves will be ripped to different sides of the set....The other effect is someone sticking their fingers into someones eyes. This is a close up and the fingers going into the eye with blood will be shown. If anyone has any ideas of how to accomplish this, that would be great. Thanks

Yikes, those are some pretty complex shots. How are you planning on doing the levitating? If you are able to greenscreen and digitally remove wires/harnesses, the cutting in half shouldn't be any more complicated than making the dummy. You would want to make the two halves on the dummy seperate from each other with the gore already in place for the split midsection. Rig some blood tubing under the dummy's clothes and hang the two halves with some wire. Use a small amount of tape to keep the halfs from coming apart too soon and set up your shot. On action have two crew members pull the connecting wires in different directions, this will rip the dummy in half in the two different sides of the set and start pumping blood. You may want to rig up a blood bag to be torn open as the dummy splits so a big gush of blood comes out intially. Then in post, edit out the wires and add some sound effects.
The fingers in the eyes is a bit tricky too. You would need to make a fake head, with precut holes and paths for the fingers to travel through. After you make the head, pop the eyes in the sockets, and make sure you can push them through the precut holes, adjust the wideness of the path accordingly. Rig up some blood tubing and on action have your actor ram his fingers through the eyes.

great ideas, thanks. We will be levitating with greenscreen and harness. My co writer/ 1st Ad came up with something similar to the dummy idea. However, if we dont get the correct lighting/ skin tones on the dummy. It would look very unrealistic and like a dummy. We could use some quick camera shots to not really show it, but then the scene losses its flavor. My thought was block 3 different shots and bring them together in post. 1st shot, show the scene minus the person levitating (act it out). Show levitating person infront of the green screen A) with pants and then the second shot B) put chromakey pants on him and......some how rip him apart lol???
Do you have any good ideas for a fake head? I dont want to use a manican and I have a feeling the morgue isnt to keen on giving them out. I thought about having one built, but Im thinking that might be a bit costly. Thanks agian for the response.

It would look very dummy like if the flesh tones weren't correct. You should just do the quick shots and don't linger on it too long for the maxium effect. You could do a Close Up of the midsection opening and the blood gushing out, then cut to the full dummy already seperating in mid-air.
As for the head, a mannequin would look very fake, I would suggest getting one made if you want a realistic effect. It's not going to be cheap, but it would work better.
