Hi eiram The best way of getting music into your film is to get somebody to score it for you and sync it custom to your movie. There are many composers like myself who would do it for free, just for the kicks. You can check out some of my stuff at My web site. Let me know if you are interested to collaborate with me.

Hmm, well with one process we tried with the Misfits was very long and jackassey. We finally got in contact with the management and told them of our request. We then got the forms we had to fill out, the forms were very complicated (well we thought so). We didn't end up getting a Misfit song in our movie, because of the whole form thing. We were so busy with all the other production and post production that we simply opted for local artists. For our next picture we've actually got in contact with a national label which we wont mention just in case it falls through. We went on the band's website, found their "Business" email. We then wrote them and told them about what we wanted, the manager wrote us back and asked for a sample of our previous work, and they are happy that we're interested in having the band's song in our upcoming movie. So we're sending them our movie "Bad Friend" and we'll see what happens, if we can or can not use a song of theirs in our next movie. With any band you must have their permission and credit them. If you want to use a band's song some tips might be to go to the band's website and check out their contact info. Or you could look in the c.d. booklet for their contact info. Some indie bands will probably let you use their songs for free, because of the equal publicity, some band's you might have to pay them some percent of royalties, or some you might have to give them a flat rate fee for their music. Good luck with that.

Giving credit to the band / composer is only fair, especially if you are getting the score for free. I have done a couple of indie short scores since I posted above and all I ask is to be credited. It works like this. Somebody at the film fest watch the movie and might like the score and see the credits and ask you for a contact or search for me on the web by the name he saw in the credits. That's how I get my jobs - word of mouth.
On the other hand, if you succeed in selling the film and make money and the film gets round in the main circuit, royalties gets paid according to the cue sheets and credits. Take it like this, you are not getting the royalties, the movie houses just pay it over to ACAP or BMI. Without those credits the royalties gets devided amongst the beaurocrats and nobody wins.
