While anyone these days can pick up a video camera and call themselves a filmmaker. Few are deserving of that title. David Campfield is one of the few who fall in the latter well deserving of all the accolades he receives. Here I review his directorial debut film Under Surveillance.
Under Surveillance begins with Justin Besler (Eric Conley) returning home to live with his father Kurt (David Rigg) as he no longer can stand living with his mother. His father Kurt has renovating the house to an apartment with seven distinct residents. Once Justin get used to his new surrounding he meets up with a girl named Kayla (Alexandra Eitel). Well it isnt long before she turns up dead. And Justin finds himself looking for the killer amongst the seven residents of the apartments above his house. This ties to his fathers latest case investigating a cult called Black Circle. With help of his friend Scott (Fred DeReau) and friends rooomate Rick (Dave Campfield) Justin does some detective work by installing hidden surveillance cameras inside each apartment and finding out more about the tenants.
Unlike most horror/thrillers Campfield decides not to fill the screen with pointless attempts to distract the audience with sex, gore, and blood. Rather focusing on developing interesting characters and pulling together one of the finest mystery/suspense films that I have ever seen in an independent film. It’s quite surprising that major studios are not taking notice of Campfields talents as he is destined for bigger thing to come.
