If you haven’t seen the work of Timberwolf Entertainment before Detour Vol.1 is a great way to get started. Timberwolf presents 4 shorts from director Joe Patnaud and a bonus short from director Tim Whitfield.
Snuff - When two actresses looking for an opportunity at stardom come across a low budget director they believe their dreams are about to come true. Unfortunately for them the director has other plans and takes his craft a little too seriously.
Right off the bat Detour Vol.1 delivers with Snuff. William Decoff was cast in a role that he was born to play. Decoff has a natural presence on camera that just can’t be taught. His intensity, brash over the top personality, and facial mannerism were dead on in Snuff. And the general viewer will be in awe of just how well he can portray the demented director. Heather Lee and Leah Nigro were also great as the two-wannabe actresses. They were quite sexy in their roles yet they could also portray scared, frightened, and boy could they belt out some screams. Another mention has to be made for the tall silent assistant whose role was small but made the most of his screen time. Visually Snuff has a surreal atmosphere especially with the blues and green lighting used that make the film even more dark, stylized, and far out there. Snuff receives a 5 out of 5
Samhain 101 - Laura Samuels (Erika Stone) photographer Nikki(Jessica Sonneborn) and videographer (Stephen Hludzik) go out into the woods to capture footage of a local legend of Samhain and the masked man Jack to find out that the legends are all too real.
Samhain 101 was excellent guilty pleasure slasher flick that while short on premise(like any slasher) delivers on everything else. Barry P. Cook as the guy who warns of things to come was great as the fat guy who offers the comic relief in the film. While Erika Stone as the b*tchy, uptight, complainer and Jessica Sonneborn as the blonde co-ed was more than adequate in there their roles. Stephen Hludzik played off both girls very well with believable chemistry with Jessica Sonneborn and improv banter with Ms. Stone. A throwback to 80's slasher flicks before it Samhain 101 is directed at the core audience of Timberwolfs films with hot girls, a manly man(theatre actors need not apply), smoldering hot love scene, token fat guy, and of course a brooding stalking killer. Samhain 101 receives a 4 out of 5
- After you finish with Samhain 101 definitely go back and watch it with the commentary track with Tim Whitfield and Joe Patnaud that delves into the film a little further and discusses the actors/actresses in a light humorous kind of way as well as technical aspects of the film.
Revelations - A religious man(Stephen Hludzki) struggles with his believes as he tempted and taughted but is it real or all in his mind?
Completely different than the first two shorts Revelation shows Timberwolf's effort to tackle diverse subject matters. Revelations is well written and works well in short film format. Actors Stephen Hludzik and Jessica Sonneborn both put out excellent performances in a difficult topic to deal with religion and sin. And while the run time was short the film had the most profound story that was lingering in your mind long after you saw it. Revelations receives a 4 out 5
Roadkill - Roadkill tells the story of Jenny(Danielle Lozeau) a typical teen that like many kids today makes the mistake of drinking and driving. While speeding down the road she throws an empty bottle out the window and gets distracted for a split second and hits a wanderer(Kevin Cirone). The mysterious man doesn't take nicely to being hit by a car and left for dead and acts out his bloody revenge.
This is my second time around reviewing this short and I can tell you not much has change in my initial opinion of the film. Kevin Cirone who probably could kick ass and take names as a lead in a drama just doesn’t do it for me as the sinister type. He's more Ben Affleck than Christian Bale(American Psycho). The complete opposite of Decoff's character in Snuff. But who knows with the announcement of Roadkill 2 he could very well prove me wrong the next time around. Danielle Lozeau does double duty on Detour Vol. 1 and I have to tell you that she lights up the screen everytime theres a scene with her in it. Roadkill receives a 3 out of 5
The Devil's Window - Three girls(Danielle Lozeau, Katherine Ryan, Molly Cranna) one night try to conjure up the spirits with their ouija board. Opening the gates to the other side that they cannot closed.
Here we have the bonus short from director Tim Whitfield. This is a complete contrast to the first film which is more in your face while Devils is more about character development and carefully crafting the storyline and plot. Danielle Lozeau was great playing the b*tchy friend whom has no shame in admitting that she slept with the boyfriend of Katherine Ryan’s character. And all three play off each other very well in each scene. The plot twist at the end through me completely off and made the short worthwhiled. The Devil's Window receives a 4 out 5
Detour Into Madness Vol. 1 packs a lot into 90 mins. And I can say that all involved should be proud of the final product. I hope to see more of what Joe Patnaud has to offer in the future as well as the entire Timberwolf Team.
Overall score 4 out of 5
