Across between Carrie and I spit on your grave yet with modern update to the old classics. We take a look at Bad Reputation from Writer/Director Jim Hemphill.
Michelle Rosen(Angelique Hennessy) is a loner at her high school when one day a boy asks her to go to a party. She excited as she’s never kiss a boy or have any friends. And she buys a dress that her mother lets her know makes her look very *friendly* personty. Nonetheless she wears the dress to the party and becomes the center of attention amongst the guys. This makes the other popular girls jealous that Michelle is trying to steal their boyfriends. Later on in the party Michelle is supplied with a good amount of booze and slips a roofy. Obviously dazed and confused she is taken into a room and brutally rape by two guys and with a third guy who is watching the door. After the horrible act one of the popular girls sees Michelle on the bed passed out and is led to believe that she is loose and initiated the sex with guys. To teach Michelle a lesson the popular girls duct tape her to a tree and leave her they’re to fend for herself. The next day there is flyers everywhere claiming she is a very *friendly* person and her reputation dredge into the mud. Michelle is seriously dramatized by the event and tries to turn to someone to no avail. Her mother is drunken wreck who has no sympathy for her daughter and the guidance counselor is more interested in her boobs than listening to her talk. When Michelle is at an all time low with her self esteem she decides to fight back and take out her bloody revenge on those who wrong her.
What Bad Reputation lacks in budget makes up in a well-crafted script that touches candidly on today’s society. Jim Hemphill scarily depicts what its like to be in high school and the peer pressure young people have to deal with surreal realism. Its not surprising that no one came to Michele’s aid when she was rape. It is very difficult for teens to go against the crowd and defend the outcast. Literally how many times do we hear in the news about a girl getting rape at a party and then be shunned/harass by schoolmates to the point that they have to transfer schools to get away from there bad reputation. What I like about the film is that Michelle character with everything against her didn’t roll over. Rather in a sense showed empowerment of woman by getting her dignity back in vicious manner. But hey they were deserving of the payback they received.
Bad Reputation is a must see film with great performances, smart dialogue, and a tragic story.
