If I got the money ... DigiBeta or DVCam. But most of the time it'll be miniDV or D8. Both can provide a decent picture and hold up well in the Avid system. I used to work in SVHS and Hi8 so anything with a higher rez than that and no loss in editting is a VAST improvement. LOL
I've also worked in 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm but can't justify the cost anymore. I'll sacrifice a little 'look' to keep money in my pocket.

Preferred format? Digitbeta is the best format that I could possibly get my hands on. 16mm would really be my choice but that is out of my league.
Actual format? MiniDV.

I've shot in most all formats. DV is great for learning and having fun. You can get some professional results out of it if you're willing to take your time and light it right.
I love shooting film. I own an Arri SR camera package and really like 16mm.
But in the end, nothing beats 35mm. I've shot 3 features on 35mm and it' s a joy. Now, the only problems is they should put a dollar counter on the side instead of a footage counter.
