Been doing some reading and have completely lost my self.... problem is as follows, i have an xl1s and am trying to get a more film like look to my footage, i have gone beyond all the usual stuff of tweaking onboard settings and post production tinkering, (Happy with image quality) and have been reading about 35mm film lense mounts, im after the shallow depth of field that the lenses have, but im not sure how to go about this change. I have seen pl to xl1s mounts for about $700 but as far as lenses go they all seem really expensive, and the list of options is simply staggering... Options open to me seem to be either finding a cheaper method of reducing dof with out the masking techniques (the stocking over lense routine) Buying the adapter and renting some lenses... or buying the adapter and splashing out on 1 all round lense. I can see myself being able to spend a reasonable ammount to address this problem, anywhere under £3000-4000 maximum, thats $5000-7000 but of course, the cheaper the better. Really appreciate some replies to this long winded question.

Sorry for the typos, its early and i was at work all night Ive been doing a little more reading, seen some very nice screen takes from the camera and some bad ones, my reading took me back to where i started tho, looking at the canon 3x wide angle lense specifically for the xl1s. It seems to have the good focal range of the 35mm lenses to in theory pull off shallow dof shots and possible racks but being a video lense im not sure if it will still have the great dof qualities as a true 35mm lense. Am so lost as how to spend my money, can any camera gods please help me? :-(

Okay after alot of looking around i finally found something that made sense, soloution is so easy its almost embarrasing, but never mind, the need to splash out on either a mini 35 adapter or a 35mm lense have been dealt with, the question now turns to, would the canon 3x lense be a good idea? or should i still consider using a higher quality glass lense and adapter?

Do you mean a 35mm motion picture lens? If so, I imagine you would be better to rent one rather than buy it. A decent Arri or Panavision lens will cost well into four figures. Also, the XL1 features the ability to use Canons own range of interchangeable lenses, so you could simply try buying one of those? I really don't think it's worth spending too much on fancy lenses or adaptors when the final image is only going to be MiniDV anyway, you could put the money to better use by investing in a seperate sound mixer and rifle mic or some lights or something (assuming you don't already have those items?) EDIT: In fact, if you have £3000 to spare, why not take the next step and upgrade to an HDR FX1? That way you could shoot HDV instead of MiniDV. Far better way to spend the money imo.

To be honest, im getting used to the xl1s, im not planning on making anything too serious asin like cinema presentation wise, mainly internet and dvd playback, the xl1s gives a nice image, well atleast i like it :-) was just mainly looking for a way to get the shallower depth of field, i think i will stay with the canon until the day i can afford to shoot more elaborate script ideas that i have. The money that i have at the moment is going towards simple lighting, sound and camera stabilizing/mounting/support. Il stick with this for a while until i have more confidence to spend big bucks on my ideas, thanks for your feedback.
