shooting on minidv cam at night

Hey, has anyone here ever shot footage using a minidv camcorder at night and only used the little on board camera light for light? If anyone has, how does it turn out? Can you see your actor completely? When I watch the show cops, they have an on board camera light that lights up the subject in front of them that they are filming. I would like to film at night without my light kit because I don't have access to electric at all times, and I wanted to find out if those little camera lights would light up the subject that I am filming. I don't need it to light up the area all around them, just the actor. If this does not work, does anyone have an idea of a cheap light which does work by battery power?
