Hostel 2, Grindhouse, 28 weeks later, all of these films were expected to do well and all of them have bombed at the box office. Do you think this hurts the genre as a whole? Do you believe less horror films will be made in the future and budgets will be limited and we'll basically be returning to the 90s. Or do you think it just means there will be less remakes and retreads and better quality films released?

I think show business is business... If you look at Variety and some of the trades, they are all posting articles on how horror is dead, which of course it isn't, it may just be forced underground again and limited to the low-budget slate of pics for a while. That's why I'm for supporting the genre. Most executives are not going to distinguish between Grindhouse and Saw 4... they just know that horror films are not paying off anymore. Sadly, that means that less money gets pumped into new projects that may be worthwhile. It's all a big cycle, of course, but I was getting optimistic for a while. The original stuff still gets my money, even if the quality is less than astounding. I think it's an interesting subject regardless... And I think I have finally decided to boycott the Zombie Halloween 'reimagining.' I loved Devil's Rejects, but this borders on sacrilege for me.

I hear ya. It seems that Zombie wants people to be terrified by Myers and the way he's going about this is to portray him as a very real serial killer. I think this movie is going to demystify the character and I like the idea that he's just this silent person hiding behind an expressionless mask and there's something supernatural about him. Carpenter never felt the need to explain his true nature, he just allowed Michael to be Micahel.

Exactly, and when you did see the manner in which he moved in Halloween 2, it lost all it's magic. I think it's simply unecassary. If you're going to do a remake, remake a crappy film with better script and actors.

I'm going to support the movie simply because while it is a remake, it isn't just rehashing the first movie frame-for-frame( the omen, anyone?). Zombie wanted to do something different with it. The Thing is one of the best horror movies ever made, in my opinion, and it went in a drasticly different direction from the original. Now I of course havn't seen it yet, and I don't expect it to surpass the original, of course, I just think that we should support originality in remakes(yes I realize how that sounds) and especialy in the current climate. It's a hard R and I want to postpone the return to the early 90s state as much as the rest of us. Especialy to prevent other studios from thinking twice about releasing the wonderful 30 Days of Night as an R in stead of a watered down, but potentialy more profitable, pg-13.

I definitely see the point here, especially in the wake of the success of 1408 as other horror releases of the R-rated variety are tanking. I completely agree that The Thing was an inspired remake, but taht's the exception, rather than the rule... The classic horror films of the 70s had a bite that the modern, gorier versions don't seem to have (Texas Chainsaw, Hills Have Eyes, etc.). So, we have to walk that fine line between supporting a genre we all enjoy, and yet not supporting crap films. But, we do have to continue to vote with our dollars. I'll just have to see some pretty impressive reviews beofre I plunk down the money for Hallowen.

Yeah, I found 1408 pretty uninteresting, though through no fault of John Cusack. Hostel 2 was several times the better of the first, and it flopped, sending Eli Roth into hiding. Oh well. At least we still have Saw 4(groan).

yhea and what happend to Roth? Wasnt he supposed to Write and Direct the remake of the bad seed, that deal probly went dead. And why in the hell are these horror flicks coming out with PG-13 ratings, the all mighty dollar and so little kids can see it. And the SAW franchise should have ended with part 2!
