Man i thought the last few films I saw were pretty unoriginal but passion plays go back to when ... Medieval days? Im not seeing this. Sounds like a grueling guilt-ridden experience. Has anyone seen it? I wonder if it's true what they say about the anti-Jewish message. I always though the Pharisees had alot to do with the crucificition but I'm far from an expert here. I only hope Satan has a goatee .... you know, for historical accuracy

I saw "The Passion" last night, and for me, I don't see the film as being anti-semetic. Yes, there are parts of the movie that anti-semetic groups will use to try and further there cause. But for me, walking out of the theater, i didn't blame ne1 for what happened. I did feel guilty because look what he died for... and look at us today, still as sin ridden as ever. n e ways, i loved the movie and came out in tears... (ok, so im a sap, i admit it) but it was a really powerful. I gave the film 4 stars out of 4. I hope this helps.
Chao ;D

People have to stop and realize that the book this stuff is based on, the Bible, is at best a fictionalized history of the Jews before Christ and the story of Christ as handed down in oral tradition for almost 200 years BEFORE it was written down. Has anyone done a fish story lately??? Do you realize how much that story could have been tainted, changed, and dileberately altered in those 200 years? You have to remember that history is written by the winners ... in this case it was the men who ended up controlling the church. The bible is a good book, it is an interesting book, but at the end of the day, it is JUST a book. And Christ was JUST a man. This day and age he could be considered to be another David Koresh and hunted by the CIA and FBI for subversion against the country. Hey, that sounds like the story of the Bible ... Hmmmmm!

Even more people need to stop and think before they press the "Post" button on a diatribe which includes insensitive and potentially offensive remarks. A little tact goes a long way. Plus, it helps your argument if you know your history.
The Gospels, which were the primary source material for this movie, are widely-acknowledged to have been written within thirty years after the death of Jesus by men who were eyewitnesses to the events. There was no need to rely on "oral history" 200 years later. As far as the "history written by the winners" comment: Christians suffered continued persecution from their Roman rulers until 313 A.D. when Emperor Constantine declared religious freedom. So, even if the Bible was not written until 200 A.D., it would hardly have been written by "the winners."
As yet, I have not seen the movie, but I plan to.

I always saw the bible as a collection of parables myself, never really meant to be taken literally. But everyone has their own take on it. Don't really know a great deal about the history of the bible myself.

saw this yesterday afternoon. I went in not knowing what to expect with all the publicity and discussion. Being raised Catholic and going to Catholic school I know the story to well and I think people including myself have a tendance too go.. "yeah yeah he was arrested, beaten, flogged, forced to carry a cross, beaten more and crucified" I think I became immune to what this man suffered as a human. Its had become just a story to me.
Gibson throws it in your face. Whether you believe in Christ or not, its still a powerful story, or Legend if you want to call it that. He gives us his vision of the story which is dead to mine. I also loved how he depicts Jesus's mother, brother and Mary Magdeland (SP) and how they followed and suffered in heart with him. It was very tender when Jesus fell with the cross and his mother had a flash back of him falling as a child. She runs to him and tells him. "I am here" Her heart broke with his flesh and it wonderfully done in that aspect.
There has also been a lot of talk of the film blaming the Jews for the death of Christ and bringing forth problems for the Jewish community of today. I don't agree with that. It tells the story by the bible and does not blame anyone. Its fate, destiny and the way it was written in the old Testament to be. And I think people today are just overreacting to an age old story that is just shown to the audiance as to how it was for him. His actual suffering and torture as a man. The film makes you think at what this man suffered for his faith and mankind. Yes the effects are bloody and realistic. But its not a 45 minute blood bath. During his floggings and beatings and the carrying of the cross and the crucifiction it shows flash backs and takes you away for a minute from the brutality. I think the flogging was the worst for me. They literally rip his flesh and you can see his ribs. I always pictured him standing and being lashed across the back and some cuts on him. In this they beat him front and back and not just with canes. But with beads and hooks and it does seem to go on forever.
If you are not a religious person, you will still love this film. A friend was with us that did not even really know the story of Jesus. She knew he had apostles and he was crucifed. That was about it. She was in tears throughout the entire film. It was not a religous experience for her, but a tender film that showed what someone will do for faith and God. She applauded the film. So I think its for everyone and not just a Christian thing. Eve

I recently viewed this movie and I thought that it was great. You dont really have to be religious to enjoy the story that is being portrayed. I believe in God and Jesus but never really followed the story and this movie still effected me. It effected my friend, who an athiest, deeply. He didnt suddenly believe in the religion that this is taken from or anything, but he did feel for Jesus and cried through the entire film.
Anyhow, great movie - 4 stars out of 4. Extremely powerful movie and actually kind of frightening to think that something like this could happen to anyone.
Best, Randy
