Word I've heard is that Universal wants to remake Evil Dead and will even begin casting soon. Riami is not going to be involved and from what I've heard doesn't even own the material and you can forget about Bruce being in it as well. Tell me this is all a bad dream ...

Remakes is the fad now days.. its just something we will have to live with. Who knows, we might be surprised by one out of 100 and it might actually be good.

Since they are about to release Dawn of the Dead (it looks more like a completely different movie than a remake but what the heck, it still using the old title). It appears that Hollywood has (re)entered the 'let's make old new again' phase of film making. The funny thing ... they NEVER LEARN HOW STUPID IT IS!!! Leave them alone unless the last time they were made they were a silent film. I'd love to see someone do Metropolis and find a way to be faithful to the original story.

Why don't you remake 'Metropolis' yourself 'dad'? It's well within the public domain these days, so you can safely remake it and sell it. Many 'distributors' already sell the original on DVD. Might be a good follow-up to your George Meillies short? Also, seeing as you are selling DVD's of Ray Harryhausen stuff (which actually might not be PD, as he wasn't dead two weeks ago when I saw him here in London) it shouldn't pose any ethical problems either

A person doesn't have to be dead for stuff to be PD. Rights to the fairy tales were released a long time ago here in the states. They were put into the domain for free distribution to schools and libraries. At least that is what I've been able to determine. I would never sell anything I don't have the right to. So if someone proves me wrong ... I'll pull my DVD immediately. But I haven't sold any anyhow ... nobody cares about Harry anymore I guess. Too bad too.
I'd love to take a hack at Metropolis. But it would have to be a big budget production and I don't have that kind of leverage.

Couldn't Metropolis be done with virtual sets though? A bit of CG and some greenscreen and away you go. I think it would make a great project, and now's the time to do it, what with the Anime version coming out etc. etc. As for PD rights, it’s a very complicated issue, and there have been many, many examples of films slipping in and out of the PD (King Kong being an obvious one) and obviously the death of the author does not automatically guarantee that the work is freely available. I would say however, that these particular short films are almost undoubtedly not in the public domain as an item for third parties to sell. Free distribution rights may have been granted, but I think that could be a grey area. Given that the ‘author’ of the films is still with us, and also that he is therefore available for consultation, it might be an idea to drop the guy a line. Who knows, maybe you could become the official distributor for the collected animations of RH? Don’t forget that the ‘Tortoise and the Hare’ has only recently been finished, and that (as far as I am aware) there are plans to revisit the remaining fairy-tale films. Incidentally, I’d strongly disagree with your assertion that “nobody cares about Harry anymore’ That is probably far from the case, I think you will find that a great many people care deeply about Harryhausen material, the man is a legend, and his following is certainly not a minority. If it wasn’t for guys like him, it’s doubtful that we would have some of today’s big hitters working on such amazing fantasy films, there is no doubt that Rays work inspired the likes of Spielberg, Cameron and Jackson. I’d thoroughly recommend checking out the ‘Animated Life’ book, it’s probably the best book on his work to date. If you’re a fan of the man and his work, this is the one for you!! books.guardian.co.uk/extracts/story/0,6761,1110482,00.html

Maybe I spoke to soon. A new report is coming out that, along with the Ash vs Freddy and Jason rumors (which as far as I can tell are just rumors), New Line is very much interested in doing ED4. Frankly, I could care less if it happens. But just the thought of an Evil Dead minus Riami and Campbell ... bleh ... I should really not read so much into these net rumors. You never know what's real and what's coming out of someone's a**.

I really hope they don't remake evil dead!!! What is it with stupid remakes??? its like the mainstream are trying to get rid of any trace of independant film that is left. Remakes just give the classics a bad name!

I think as long as the remake is a half decent film, you can enjoy it. You just have to detach yourself from the original. Dawn of the Dead 04 was a good film - and completely different from the original. It was being made for a different purpose. Now, Evil Dead isn't exactly the sort thing which would translate well into the modern mainstream culture, but i think it might be bearable if it manages to be different to the orignals.

The night of the living dead remake was not too bad but lacked on gore! The deleted scenes from night of the living dead remake were unbelievable! There was an exploding head, loads of squib shots the lot but they were typically cut out.

Oh I hope they do remake it (and let's face it, if they can make something as out-there as Freddy vs. Jason, it's believable they'll do an Evil Dead remake)... Even if it sucks--and a tiny part of me hopes that it does--it'll introduce newbies to the glory, and gory, that is Evil Dead. I just hope the remake is Scary, and not "Funny" like Freddy vs. Jason. I just saw that movie on Starz, and boy oh boy. (vomits)

thing i'm worried about is that if AVP is successful, and Jason v Freddy was a hit, there will be more of this pairing up garbage. Taking characters from othre films and pitting them against one another- yawn. Before Jason v Freddy became a hit, it seemed like we would be treated to another Alien film that took up where the last one ended (I guess it would be on Earth .. pretty cool ...) and AVP seemed like a longshot. Less than a year later the d**n film is coming out! This was rushed!
