What do some of you guys to do fund your project and get it's name out there? One idea that I had was to have a car wash to raise budget money. I havn't tried this yet, but I heard another indie filmmaker who did this and got about 400 bucks! Not bad if you ask me.

Yard sales, bake sales, petty larceny, needle exchange, blood plasma donations, ransom notes, grand theft auto, ... ;D Just kidding, HK! You can take two routes here (at least!): 1. The often-bragged about, maverick-filmmaker, Rodriguez-esque, "I've got to get my vision out there!" sort-of way. This includes: charging on your credit cards, holding garage sales, selling your car, asking dad, casting Uncle Edgar (the CEO who always wanted to be a star), checking under sofa cushions, etc. OR 2. The commercial way. This includes: putting together a budget, a business plan, and a PR package. Then, meeting with potential investors and impressing them with your ability to produce a saleable product. Or, you could work long and hard hours and save every dime, but I figured you already knew that. In short, the answer to the most asked film festival question, "How do you get the money" is: Any way you can. Personally, I dig the car wash idea.

Or, you could do what I do. . .
Get your student loan when going to college/university, pay your tuition, buy your books and use the left over money to make your movie. Just be prepared to eat beans and rice until the next student loan comes through (also, get a part-time job. You'll need it).

Here is an idea, but it is a long shot because it would have to be a collective group effort. We have over one hundred members here. Certain members need $$ right? So... If we dig into our pockets and whip out $10, we can send it to that needy filmmaker. If EVERYBODY here did that the filmmaker could get $1000 to put towards their movie. I know it sounds silly, just an idea ;D

That's actually not a bad idea slay. Maybe put up a fund where people can donate a small amount of money. Have some type of incentive for donaters if possible. Once we reach a certain amount like $1000 you were talking about. Then run a contest for an original screenplay, director, and a composer to give a chance for everyone to participate(I dont think their could be a special fx contest because of location issues). Have a section on this board to have people propose y they should be the person involved in the project and the other board members would choose the script, director, and composer from what we think deserves it. This would be sort of like "Project Greenlight" but on a smaller scale. It would be a challenging project to pull off but intrigueing none the less. What does everyone else think?

I think it's a great idea. How would you choose a director though? Screenplay I can see. Composer, easy enough. But director? Would you base it on past accomplishments?

Well for director contest i think their are a couple of possiblities. The easiest of course would be to look at past work to determine the winner.
I actually like the way that project greenlight ran their director contest which was this "If you fancy yourself a director, prepare a short movie or scene no more than three minutes in length. You may also submit an existing sample of your work, but it must fit within the contest parameters. Directors may be as creative and inventive as they like, bearing in mind that this three-minute scene will be your opportunity to impress a jury of your peers with your ability to direct a feature film."

Well if you need a space to show the movies I can include it at one of my shows at the SSnova! Or we could post the three minute shorts online ;D

Yeah slay i was thinking of having people post their shorts online so everyone on the board can view them. I dont think the shorts should be too big of file if you compress it to .wmv or .avi format. And have each contestant host their own short. The biggest problem with this idea is to have enough people be willing to donate to make this worth it. I dont think participate would be a problem as i think everyone would like some funding to make a movie;D

Okay here is my idea. I have noticed that this thread has been read about 96 times. 96 pairs of eyes have seen this. 96 times $10 is $960
How many filmmakers do we have here? This is how I would get this to work: All filmmakers list their mailing address. We re-arrange it in alphabetical order. We all agree to send each other ten dollars. We do this three times a week. This would only work if we could all get people serious about it. Just so we don't get any money grubbing crackpots, only filmmakers with track records can get the money. If you have successfully produced one or more feature length movies or five shorts, then you qualify. You must also have your own website that showcases your work and gives information on where to get it. Or maybe have people send in the script that they want funded, we check out the script, if it's cool we set up the filmmaker with cash. Any other ideas folks?

Excellent ideas slay! Maybe if we can gage the interest we can setup something on board for the idea.
Now heres an idea that i got off another board(non filmmaking related forum). Now the webmaster of this other board was paying a certain amount of money for the server his forum was running on. The members decided to help keep the site running. So they held an raffle. Now they had a grand prize usually of something of $200 value(ps2, xbox, dvd burner) which was either donated by a member or the initial money from the raffle was used to pay for the grand prize and the profits after that were given to the webmaster to keep the site running. And members donated their own prizes like dvds etc. This way their was one big winner and a couple of small winners who won something. They setup a paypal account where people would buy tickets for $2 each and if you bought more like 10 tickets for $2 each you would get 2 tickets for free. Lots of people bought tickets as who can pass up spend $2, $10, $30 for a chance to win a ps2 or xbox.
Now why not do the same here. Have a grand prize that people would pay tickets to win. Have smaller prizes where members donate their movies and other things. And all the profits would go to filmakkers who need money for their films.
Just another fund raising idea

I think we can get some of the members to donate their movies and other merch as smaller prizes. But what would people want as the grand prize. Maybe something filmmaking related like video editing software? Or something non related that people would just want? Suggestions?

I like the 'raffle' idea, but it might be difficult to do ir in a way that would entice people to part with their readies. Also you'd need to sell 200 tickets just to cover the cost of the prize Maybe I could raffle off my old Escort? ;D
